The inspiration behind the No Fatalities series was a 1980s National Geographic image of a small airplane that was carrying relief supplies after an earthquake, crashing into a pick-up truck. It was a bad accident on top of a devastating earthquake. The text next to the image described the accident, and reported that there were No Fatalities. It was a near miss. The image touches on our feelings about being a survivor in the ongoing pandemic as well as the personal near misses that we all have inevitably experienced in our lives. The series No Fatalities holds these strong feelings of sudden trauma and a survivor’s relief together in a single image.

No Fatalities (One) and No Fatalities (Two) are currently on view at the Hyde Park Art Center as a part of the exhibit Dream until March 20th, 2022.
